Which Way to Nature

There is a sound like rain in the forest which makes a person pause for thought on a day when there is not a cloud in the sky. The sound is so continuous that it's hard to believe it could be bits of falling leaves as the caterpillars eat them, the sound of their young raining down, or their droppings or a combination of all three. I can walk towards the noise and it seems like nothing falls down on me at all. Are there invisible fleas in the forest taking jumping lessons? Do caterpillars communicate by stomping their feet on the leaves? Could a caterpillar stomp even if it wanted to?
